Rosanna and Martha HAGGARD

In the Introduction, Verla Williams had suggested that Rosanna HAGGARD and Edward BLAKEY's second wife, Martha HAGGARD were related.

Rosanna was born in 1861 and had married James BLAKEY in 1878. We've seen her in the 1880 US Federal Census with James and in the 1885 MN State Census with James and three children. In the latter census they are listed right below the family of Irena Haggard (57), who is on the previous page, and her children: Henry (30), his wife Sarah (23), their daughters, Mary (3), and Minnie (10 months). Her other children, Newton (27), and Malissa (19) are on the next page above James BLAKEY and family.

Could Rosanna be related to this family? As it turns out, from the 1875 MN State Census we learn that she is, in fact, the daughter of John (66) and Irene (47) HAGGARD. The HAGGARDs are living in Dewald Township, Nobles Co., and their family includes the following children: Henry (21), Newton (18) [James and Rosanna named their first son, Newton.], Rosena (13) [Rosanna], Malissa (9), Clora (8) [Clara], John [Jr.] (27), and Rhoda (11).

This is confirmed by the 1870 US Federal Census. Rosanna Haggard (7) is listed in the household of John (61) and Irena (43) Haggard. The family is living in Nobles Co., Minnesota and includes her brothers and sisters: John [Jr.] (27), Albert (21), Henry (15), Newton (14), Rhoda (6), Melissa (4), and Clara (1).

Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration. T132, RG29, 13 rolls.

Since she was born in 1861, the 1870 US Federal Census is the first census in which Rosanna appears, but in none of the ones seen thus far have we come across a Martha HAGGARD.

The 1925 Iowa State Census provides some useful information. Searching for Jane Woodward, Martha's younger sister, turned up the following record from Ancestry.com:

Listed as the father for Jane HAGGARD Woodward, who is now living in Algona, Kossuth Co., IA, is John HAGGARD. Obviously if John is Jane's father, and Jane and Martha are sisters, he must also be Martha's father. If we look at the 1860 US Federal Census, we find John (50) and Irena (32) Haggard living in Kelso, Scott Co., MO with their children: John [Jr.] (12), Albert (10), Mary (7), Henry (5), Newton (4), and Alva C. (2).

The children's names track with the 1870 census, but unfortunately there is still no Martha or Jane. In addition to being a farmer, however, we learn that John was also a physician. Now, if Martha was born in 1837, in 1860 she would be 23; Jane, born in 1841, would be 19--both of them old enough to be no longer living with their parents. But since Irena in 1860 was 32, she would only have been 9 years old when Martha was born which seems highly unlikely. It would seem that John was married previously to someone else.

In Volume II of Biographies and Portraits of the Progressive Men of Iowa, there is a biography and photograph for a David A. Haggard.

Benjamin F. Gue and Benjamin Franklin Shambaugh, Biographies and portraits of the progressive men of Iowa, Vol. II (Des Moines, IA: Conaway & Shaw, 1899), p. 263. Image courtesy of Google Books.

The relevant portions are as follows:

HAGGARD, David A., of Algona, is an Iowa product, pure and simple, born in Dubuque, May 27, 1839, one year after Iowa was made a territory. His father, Dr. John Haggard, a native of Kentucky, was a man of generous impulses and good mental endowment, . . . Dr. John Haggard was married in Milliageville, Pennsylvania, to Miss Elizabeth Linn, a Tennessean by birth, whose parents were strong secessionists. David Haggard, grandfather of our subject, was born in Kentucky. . . . He left Kentucky on account of slavery and came to Iowa. John Haggard graduated from the medical school in Kentucky, and moved to Dubuque in the year 1836, when Iowa was yet in the Wisconsin territory. . . .

David A. Haggard received only a common school education, such as a boy could procure in the schools of a village in 1845 to 1855. His mother died when he was three years old, and he made his home with Grandfather Haggard. . . .
So David A. HAGGARD is a son of a Dr. John HAGGARD who was born in Kentucky and married to an Elizabeth Linn. David A. was born in 1839 which would make him the middle child of the three HAGGARD children from John's first marriage assuming Martha and Jane are his sisters. If Iowa was still part of the Wisconsin Territory when the HAGGARDs moved there it would explain some of the confusion surrounding Martha's birthplace being listed sometimes as Wisconsion and other times as Iowa. Finally Elizabeth Linn died ca. 1842 and David A. ended up living with his grandfather, also named David. John is said to have married Irena Shaw ca. 1844, so our dates line up. Now if there were only some more evidence to confirm this theory.

In fact, in the 1850 US Federal Census, there is a David HAGGARD (60) living in District No. 7, Dubuque Co., IA. Living with him are the following: Nancy (33), Eliza (27), James (17), Josiah C. (15), David (21), Mary (18), Martha (12), David (11), and Jane (9). The ages for Martha, David, and Jane agree with other sources. It's likely that Nancy is the aunt that will be living with Jane and Martha in 1900.

Original data: Seventh Census of the United States, 1850; (National Archives Microfilm Publication M432, 1009 rolls); Records of the Bureau of the Census, Record Group 29; National Archives, Washington, D.C.

Further confirmation comes from the Haggard Family World Wide Websites containing over 40,000 linked names and based on 35 years of research by Clinton R. HAGGARD:

JOHN HAGGARD was born on 30 Oct 1809 in BOONESBORO, MADISON, KY. He died on 18 Feb 1875 in WORTHINGTON, NOBLE, MN. He has reference number H117141. Parents: DAVID HAGGARD and ELIZABETH GENTRY.

He was married to ELIZABETH LYNN about 1836 in PEOSTA, DUBUQUE, IA. Children were: MARTHA HAGGARD, DAVID A. HAGGARD, JANE HAGGARD.

He was married to IRENA SHAW about 1844 in DUBUQUE, DUBUQUE, IA. Children were: WILLIAM HAGGARD, JOHN HAGGARD, ALBERT HAGGARD, NANCY HAGGARD, MARY HAGGARD, HENRY HAGGARD, NEWTON HAGGARD, ALVA CURTIS HAGGARD, ALLEN HAGGARD, ROSANNA HAGGARD, RHODA HAGGARD, MELISSA HAGGARD, CLARA HAGGARD.
Based on the above I believe it is safe to conclude that Rosanna HAGGARD, who married James Edward BLAKEY, and Martha HAGGARD, who married James' grandfather, Edward BLAKEY, as his second wife, were half-sisters.

Obituary: James BLAKEY (28 Mar 1928)

Obituary. James BLAKEY (28 Mar 1928).

Funeral of Former Resident Held Here
James Blakey, Early Pioneer Here, Laid to Rest in Riverside Cemetery Friday Afternoon

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church in this city on last Friday afternoon, honoring the memory of James Blakey, pioneer of this vicinity, who passed away at the home of his son, Robert, near Duluth, March 28th.

Mr. Blakey was known to every early settler of this community where he spent his boyhood days and where he later was the head of a splendid family. The Blakey family left Jackson county about 28 years ago, [c. 1900] settling for a while near Hayward, Wisconsin, and later moving to the vicinity near Duluth. Mr. Blakey during his many years residence in this county enjoyed the respect and friendship of a large circle of friends and news of his passing was received here with deep regret.

James Blakey was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Blakey pioneers of Des Moines township. He was born in Manchester, England, in 1856 and came to America with his parents when one year of age. May 26, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Roseanna Haggert [sic] who passed away in 1894. Seven children blessed their union, all living with the exception of a daughter, who passed away in infancy. The funeral services here last Friday were attended by the following children: Newton Blakey and Mrs. Mabel Hulbert of Duluth and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blakey of Superior, Wis., and Walter Blakey of Hayward, Wis. Mr. Blakey was also a brother of George Blakey of Des Moines township to whom the deepest sympathy is extended.

The services Friday afternoon were conducted by Rev. Meierbachtel and were attended by many old time friends of the Blakey family.
