Obituary: James BLAKEY (28 Mar 1928)

Obituary. James BLAKEY (28 Mar 1928).

Funeral of Former Resident Held Here
James Blakey, Early Pioneer Here, Laid to Rest in Riverside Cemetery Friday Afternoon

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church in this city on last Friday afternoon, honoring the memory of James Blakey, pioneer of this vicinity, who passed away at the home of his son, Robert, near Duluth, March 28th.

Mr. Blakey was known to every early settler of this community where he spent his boyhood days and where he later was the head of a splendid family. The Blakey family left Jackson county about 28 years ago, [c. 1900] settling for a while near Hayward, Wisconsin, and later moving to the vicinity near Duluth. Mr. Blakey during his many years residence in this county enjoyed the respect and friendship of a large circle of friends and news of his passing was received here with deep regret.

James Blakey was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Blakey pioneers of Des Moines township. He was born in Manchester, England, in 1856 and came to America with his parents when one year of age. May 26, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Roseanna Haggert [sic] who passed away in 1894. Seven children blessed their union, all living with the exception of a daughter, who passed away in infancy. The funeral services here last Friday were attended by the following children: Newton Blakey and Mrs. Mabel Hulbert of Duluth and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blakey of Superior, Wis., and Walter Blakey of Hayward, Wis. Mr. Blakey was also a brother of George Blakey of Des Moines township to whom the deepest sympathy is extended.

The services Friday afternoon were conducted by Rev. Meierbachtel and were attended by many old time friends of the Blakey family.

In 1928, March 28 was on a Wednesday, so most likely the funeral occurred on Friday, March 30. The article states he was born in Manchester. His birth certificate states, Rastrick, Yorkshire. The article states he was married on May 26, 1878. His marriage certificate states that it was March 24, 1878. Verla Williams' database indicates Roseanna died in 1893 in Worthington, MN, not 1894.
