Funeral services for Verland E. Blakey of Jackson, formerly of Windom, were conducted July 27 at the Living Word Lutheran Church in Windom, with the Rev. Dr. Richard Frederick officiating. Verland Blakey died on July 24, 1996, at the Jackson Good Samaritan Center. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Jackson.
Casket bearers were Kelsey Asche, Ryan Bergan, Joshua Bergan, Dan Klassen, David Klassen and Kenneth Klassen. Ushers were Ronald Becker and Jim Robinson. Music was provided by pianist Jeanette Frederick and soloist George Bakalyar. Sathe & Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Verland E. Blakey, the son of George and Lottie (Kephart) Blakey, was born on Sept. 10, 1902, in Des Moines Township, Jackson County. He attended country school in Des Moines Township.
On Aug. 22, 1927, he was united in marriage to Agnes Roe. After their marriage, they moved to a farm in Middletown Township, Jackson County. Then in 1935, they moved to a farm in Des Moines Township where they lived and farmed until 1943 when they moved to a farm in Lakeside Township, Cottonwood County. They moved to the Jackson Pines in Jackson in September 1995.
Verland was a member of the Living Word Lutheran Church in Windom.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes Blakey of Jackson; one son, Gordon and wife Shirley Blakey of Brighton, Colo.; three daughters, Verla and husband Vincent Williams of Iowa City, Iowa, Sharon and husband Dalen Asche of Bloomington, and Pamella Bergan of North Mankato; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Averland Blakey; and one brother, Orville Blakey.
